Evaluation Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

Create your own user feedback survey

From the graph at the side, we can see that from ages 16-31 would go view our thriller but not so much those under 15 because this is a thriller that depicts a lot of violence and drug use as well which might not be pleasant thing to show children under age therefore it is completely understandable to receive this result. From the graph we can see that the highest age group that would view our thriller is 16-20 years old and this is mainly because it is relate-able. As we all know that teenagers are put in a very negative light more than any other age group and our thriller shows that negativity as there is drugs, violence and peer pressure involved in this thriller. Those at the ages of 31+ would view our thriller but not so many of them probably because it does not relate to them and their lives but the minority that would watch might watch it because it relates to their children.

Evaluation Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Evaluation Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

If I were to pitch my film to one of the big production companies ( also known as the big six) which is 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures, Colombia, Warner Brothers, Paramount or Walt Disney they would most likely turn down my idea because as it nor any other film which may have a similar storyline has never been developed, produced and published to the world, and they may face the risk of losing money if it doesn't become successful at the box office and that is simply a risk big production companies can not take. They prefer to play it safe by adapting existing films and creating sequels because if they have been successful, then creating another 3 more would be another chance of gaining success. This is what they done with Fast and Furious, they are continuously making a new Fast and Furious because all the others have been a big success and it generates a lot of profit.

Furthermore if it were to be distributed I think it would be viewed by independent cinemas because to make the opening it didn't cost anything because everything was provided by the school. However if I were to go about making this full version of this film professionally it would probably be a low budget film costing at about £50,000.
But I distributed it through social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat because I have a lot of followers on both my Instagram and Snapchat so I knew my followers would enjoy seeing what I have been working on for all this time as I used to keep them updated. And this benefited us because these were ways we promoted our film for free. But as Instagram and Snapchat videos could only be about 10-15 seconds long, showing them a few clips of the interesting scenes I believed interested and intrigueed them into watching the whole thing and this is where YouTube and Facebook was useful because you are able to have a long duration of videos and it can be accessible to everyone and it will be easy for them to share it with their friends and family.

Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The key convections used in most thrillers are:
  • Suspense
  • Tension
  • Fast pacing
  • Red herrings
  • Cliff Hangers
  • Action
  • McGuffin

A McGuffin is a plot device in the form of some goal or an achievement in the film that the main characters in the film seem to focus on a lot making it seem like their main goal in the movie.
The audience aren't really engaged about what happens in terms of the McGuffin as they are more likely to more intrigued about the characters of the film. In me and my group thriller the plot device is the map in which Lord Healey is trying to recover to restart the human race.
Suspense is used in me and my group thriller film in a number of very effective ways. Suspense is firstly used by the background music which takes place throughout the thriller film, the music gives a sense of adventure., when he is picking items, so the audience is wondering what is he trying to do?The background music is taken from the theme song of award winning PlayStation 4 Game ''The Last Of Us'' the song was made by Gustavo Santaolalla.
Another way suspense was created in our thriller film was the story-line because with each scene passing suspense builds up into revealing if Lord Healey retrieves the map or not.
Also we added many filming techniques to add suspense. Firstly, we used an eyeline match to add suspense, as it puts a question in the audience heads, as they wonder what the protagnist was looking at. Also we used POV shots, to add the thrill into our thriller as it makes the audience feel like their in the protagnist position, making this a very effective shot.

A cliffhanger is when the film ends in suspense.
The cliffhanger in our thriller "Road to London" is the audience isn't sure if Lord Healey recovers the human race with the map he found in the end. The film ends with Lord Healey walking in the distance. This leavers the audience with a question in there head, what is going to happen next?

Audience feedback on Thriller

After screening our thriller we received lots of positive feedback and constructive criticism from our audience. Many people felt that the film had an interesting idea that managed to draw them into in and said that they would like to watch the rest of the film. However many people felt that the film needed to be faster paced and have more conventional elements of a thriller. Some people also said they would of liked some dialogue in the film.

Screening

In this, we had to show our thriller to a class, to see if they liked our thriller. we gave them a questionnaire to fill out to see if they liked our film and see if there any way we could improve our film. We got many positive feedback, better than our rough cut, which was a good sign

COMPLETED THRILLER

Audience feedback on rough cut

First Impressions
Good Editing/ Effects, Interesting, Confusing, Professional, Short, Good Camera
  Out of 10?
Average 5/10
What went well?
Good effects, Music, Camera Work,  Intense, Attention grabbing beginning,
What Could Be Improved?
Better Production Company, Longer, Need Complete Film.

My media colleague analysed our Rough cut. He said it did not make sense at all. However, his suspense did build up as he wanted to know what was going on. He did find it alright. Therefore we have completed our objectives because we wanted to find out if it was engaging or not. Therefore we all we have to do is tell the story very well in the rest of the part of the film. He said if we do this, our thriller would be a really good thriller.

Editing 2

This was the editing of our second idea of our film. This is our editing of our rough cut and this scene was shot in central park and we had to do different camera angles. We added in different types of screen transitions, to make our film to look professional. Also, added in music which fits into our thriller. Furthermore, we added titles and used a colour corrector to perfect our thriller.

Analysis of Modern Thriller Opening

Memento

This film has an extremely difficult narrative structure where events are told in 10 minutes segments but backwards. This echoes the confusion that the main character feels as he struggles to remember events. The opening scene was very disturbing because the first thing you will see is the picture of the wall covered with blood and the next you will see you is that the man is shaking the picture and the picture just carries on fading away as the more he is shaking the picture. The background music is very sad as its to show the event which just happened was an accident and someone who was not meant to die died.

Brick

This film opening scene is weird as a little kid is sitting in a sewage pathway looking into the tunnel as if he is waiting for someone to come out. The opening of "Brick" starts with non-diegetic western music, which feels a bit weird. The sound is almost trickled into the film but the transition is a little off putting. This is followed by a pot to a close up of shoes which again is a little bit of an odd way to start, it gives the audience very little information about what is going on and makes the audience question why they are being shown shoes. This then transitions to a close up of a face which then cuts to the view of a tunnel where we can see that the face and the shoes belong to a boy and the boy is crouched looking over at the dead body of a woman. He appears to be quite fascinated by the dead body which is really creepy. This is then emphasized by the western music that is still playing in the background. However the fact that the boy is looking at the woman in this way, and the way that he is positioned on the other side of the tunnel crouched makes the audience curious as to whether he killed this person.

Title Sequences

The production company of Se7en was New line cinema which is owned by Time Warner. The title is presented through a short footage and this was used because its the first thing you will see when you watch the trailer of the movie ning credits of the movie. The title never gave us a clue of the type of movie we was going to watch because that opening title is sued in all Time Warner films in the 90s. The title suits the genre of the film because in the center is a good distinct color of blue and the other colour is black and I think this gives the idea that the film will be a dark story,

The production company of Panic Room was Columbia which is owned by Sony Pictures entertainment. The title is a well recognised ident because Columbia is part of the big six.

The production team of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was Sony Pictures and in this title opening Sony used their unknown ident as this was the first movie that Sony made.

Audience feedback on three initial ideas

Audience Feedback on 3 initial ideas

I had my media colleague analyse our 3 initial ideas. In the inaugural idea, he said that our idea was bad, but the last bit was confusing. He thought it didnt make sense at all. He gave us very negative feedback, and he did not like it at all. Secondly, in Idea 2, he found it very interesting and unique and made him very engaging in the idea. He also sees potential in our idea. Therefore, we decided to make this our final idea. Finally, he found our idea 3 similar to Idea 1. It was not very good and also confused him. He also gave us negative feedback and suggested that we should not do this idea.

Shooting schedule

Fourth production meeting

Fourth Production Meeting
In my group we decided to form our fourth group production meeting, me and my group decided to film some material to add to the last bits of our short thriller film, so we can expand and edit the thriller film.

Editing is very important in producing a film it can either make or break it due to this my group took a long time in the editing post, as we wanted to almost perfect a outstanding thriller film.

After editing was completed in post we added our group very unique indent and title sequence at the start of the thriller this was one of the required objectives of this thriller.

Overall my group was happy with the final output.

This is my groups studio ident.

Third production meeting

In this meeting we discussed the rest of the scenes we were going to film. In this production meeting, we decided to film our rough cut. Everyone did their roles very well, and had a very good output. We edited the rough copy to see how it turns out. We were all happy with the rough copy and decided to carry on with the film.

Final Idea

The idea we chose , which was:

A man wakes up from a dream where he sees a woman dancing in front of couple of colours and us as the audience we think this is his wife and he trying to get to her before it is too late and this is his last memory of her. He is stranded in the forest trying to look for a piece of map which would lead him to London so he is in the forest for a couple of hours searching everywhere for this map and he has to survive

Second production meeting

In our second production meeting we decided what days we would film on. We also made slight changes to our final idea and made sure we had all the props ready. We checked the upcoming weather forecast to see if it was ok.

Editing no 1

Today I edited 20 seconds of my film, I had to edit scenes of me running at different angles to make it look like one smooth motion. I also added some effects to make my footage look more cinematic and a soundtrack to improve the atmosphere.

Rough Cut

Second day filming

In this shot Damola is positioning the tripod and Patrick is giving ideas where to place the camera. It was hard filming because of the weather and our hands were so cold paying attention and filming was difficult. Also since were filming in a school so it was difficult as we couldnt get the students into the shot as they are under 16 and since we do not have parental consent we cannot fixture them into the shots.

3 initial ideas for thriller opening

Idea 1
A man is on a bench hungover with no memory of the day before, he is then woken up by a police officer who recognises him as a wanted criminal. Then the man is confused and starts to run from the officer but because he is hungover he gets caught by the officer and then it is revealed that a man in a suit is watching from a distance and gets out his phone and says to someone "It's been done."

Idea 2
A normal preacher is giving a sermon with a bored audience but then it cuts to the future and the same preacher is covered in blood and is getting chased by the Fbi, the preacher get caught in a corner and pulls out a gun intending to shoot the agent but then he pulls out a card looks at it and then turns the gun on himself and shoots himself in the head. The card is then revealed to be a King of Diamonds card with proverbs 16:12 written on it.

Idea 3
A drug kingpin is arrested by police officers then it is shown on the news that he has been arrested. We then see a silhouette figure of a man watching the news he pulls out the phone and says "it's time to get the band back together, you know what we gotta do."

Sound exercise evaluation

For the sound exercise my group filmed a sequence where a deal goes wrong.

We included:
Diegetic Sound - The dialogue
Non Diegetic Sound - The soundtrack
On-Screen Sound - The dialogue
Off-Screen Sound - The Police Car
Contrapuntal Sound - Soft Soundtrack during a tense deal
Ambient Sound - The Natural noises

We didn't include:
Pleonastic Sound - We didn't find an appropriate place to include it
Sound Bridge - We only filmed one scene
Parallel Sound - We didn't remember it

We also included the soundtrack by playing it on the phone into the mic and it sounded muffled so next time we'll just edit the soundtrack in the film afterwards

Storyboard

Animatic

Mood board

Mood Board for 'A Bullet For The Preacher by Patrick Healey

Art of the title

For my example I used a thriller/horror movie called "Deadpool".

The opening scene was very unique as there was no other movie opening like this as it was a cut scene from the movie when Deadpool was beating off the guard to chase the guy who made him Deadpool. Here in the frozen time, in the back seat of a Cadillac, a hyper escalated fight takes place, In what looks like a very unruly damaging fight battered bodies are flying in all directions, engulfed in a shower of spit, blood, shattered glass and hundreds of rounds fired. Eyes are gouged and the Deadpool, the masked mutant in the middle of all that death and debris.

First day production meeting

In the first production meeting we were discussing how we would properly organise the scenes we planned to do. We had to do this because for different scenes we had to do a different camera shots and angles we had to use to make the thriller properly. Also we had to discuss the roles which every single person in our team had so we were not iced up and everyone knew their roles and the work rate could be efficient and there was no confusion.

The roles were that that Patrick was the main character Stefan was the microphone operator Damola was the Camera man and Dennis was the FBI.

First day of Filming

First day of Filming

In this picture Patrick is telling Damola and Stefan how to position the Camera so the shot is perfect and that Patrick whole body is in the scene.
Again in this picture Patrick is positioning the tripod so we could get the correct camera shot e.g. close up, extreme shot wide shot.

Speed and style of editing

Editing

Editing is the process of looking at all the footage shot during the making of a film/TV programme and placing it in the desired order and joining it together. There are two key areas to concentrate on the with editing.  In a film each scene may last a matter of seconds, or it could continue for minutes but the length of each sequence establishes the pace of the film moving the action along. The speed of editing will help to determine the mood of what is taking place on screen.

Speed of editing
If the audience is feeling anxiety and suspense the editing will be quick and the scenes will be changing frequently. In the Bourne ultimatum the scenes change quickly in the chasing scenes to make the audience feel in the film and make the atmosphere tense.
If the atmosphere is calm and relaxed the scenes will last longer and the scenes will not change quickly or some times not at all. For example a romantic comedy. This link is for the film sleepless nights in Seattle and in the scene when Tom Hank and Meg Ryan are speaking the scene transition is slow and the background music is relaxed and sets the atmosphere.
Scenes at the beginning of the film - as it begins to tell its story - must be long enough for us to be able to understand where we are and what is going on. It is also slow to introduce the main characters.
As film the progresses scenes may become shorter as the editing cuts between telling two or more story lines at the same time.

Idents

An ident is designed a particular studio. It is like their logo. It needs to be memorable and easy for the audience to recognise. Films and television studio often having moving idents. An ident always appears at the start of a film before the opening titles.

The big six 'Major' command approximately 90% of box office takings.
The big six are:

  • Universal
  • Columbia
  • Paramount
  • Warner bros
  • Walt Disney
  • MGM
The purpose of an ident is for identity, branding, packaging and re-packaging, schedule and segmentation within scheduling. All of these purposes are extremely important. The importance of an ident is is to show branding and to sell the companies name to the fans as they will be interested in that film if that film company made it.

Micro/Macro

The key technical components of a film can be divided into two key categories:

  • Macro Elements
  • Micro Elements
The term "Macro" elements refers to:
  • Genre
  • Elements
The term genre refers to a category of media products that are classified as being similar in form or type.

Story: A sequence of events, often referred to as the plot

  • Narrative Structure: The way those events are revealed to the audience

Narrative

Linear = The sequence of events are shown in the order that they took place - beginning, middle, end. This is the most popular form of narrative structure

Non- Linear=  the sequence of events are revealed out of the expected order. E.g. pulp fiction
